May - Then and Now

A year ago... my life changed.  It changed in ways it has never changed before.

- My husband came home from Iraq for almost a month.
- My mother died.
- I lived my last month as a fat girl.

I've been going back looking at a lot of pictures from May of 2010 and realizing how fat I really was.  I mean... I knew the number on the scale said 325 and holy shit, that is a lot... but I never really truly looked at myself as being that big.   I saw the pictures, I knew I was huge... but I never really felt it in my core that I was so big.

I guess I always felt I looked, even at 325lbs, the way I do now... beautiful.   I guess I was in denial.  Because 325lbs was not beautiful.

And.... to be really honest here.  I do not know what my husband saw in that fat girl.  Seriously.  She is not pretty. I feel so blessed to know that my husband loves me for who I really am inside.

Let's take a look back at some pictures of me from a month before my surgery - May 2010.

My husband is so tiny sitting next to me.

The baby shouldn't be the same size as my face.

I'm was the size of all three of my friends put together.  Sad.

The width of my midsection and the size of my neck astound me looking back at these pictures.

Let's move on to the good stuff..... here are some pictures from May 2011.   This is how I've always pictured myself looking.  It's amazing to finally realize that I'm actually there.  I'm healthy, in shape, and at a weight where I don't look like a balloon.
Is that my neck and cheeks?  I actually have a face!

Uhm... am I actually smaller across than my husband now?  YES!

:) Happy :)

Is that a flat tummy?

Well sorta. It only looks flat because of the leggings I've got pulled up to my boobs.  But hey, that's not the point.  The point is this:

I weigh ONE HUNDRED NINETY POUNDS!  What?  Huh 190lbs? Yes.  That is correct!

So... for all you math geeks out there, that's a grand total of 135lbs down from my highest weight of 325lbs.

Today, I also was determined to find some summer clothes since it's in the 70's here now.  I can't wear sweaters and leggings forever! So... to the PX I went to try on everything they had... again.  I DID though find 2 pairs of capri pants and a few shirts.  Guess what size they were?

12!  I'm a size 12 pant now!!!!  I fluxuate between a M, L and XL in shirts though, depending on the fit.  But, both pairs of capri's I got were a 12!   I don't think  I've been a size 12 since jr high!  I can't believe that I've started shrinking again!!

And you know what... it's totally because I started exercising again.  I've walked/run several times in the last week and I feel great about it!  The scale is moving and it's because I'm exercising and eating right!  It's such a great motivator!

Yay!

One last thing... my BMI has dropped from being "Obese" to just "Overweight" at 29.8.  Sweet! My BMI before surgery was 50.9.

I'm better than I think!

So remember that meltdown I had a couple days ago? The one where I admitted to eating cheetos and pepsi?  Well... it wasn't as bad as I thought.  I bought a scale at the PX and then this morning, I stepped on it.

194lbs.

131lbs total lost.

Woah.   Seriously?  Cause when I got on the plane to Germany... I was hovering around 199-201.  It would change daily, but it wasn't dropping.

So...  I guess I wasn't doing as bad as I thought and I really just needed to give myself a break.

Life, my weight loss, diet, exercise... it's not always going to go smoothly.  I have to remember that.  This is for  LIFE.  It's going to be a long journey... did you hear that,  a JOURNEY.  Not a sprint.  It's going to have big hills for me to get over... like this move... but, I will  reach the TOP and  I will coast down the other side to victory... just  like I'm doing now.

I bought new workout clothes... size L in Adidas stuff.  I've never been a size L in athletic stuff.... EVER.  It was awesome being able to try on anything I wanted to.  (PS... thanks Tressa for the advice on what kind of stuff to get!)  I can't wait until my running shoes get here. I don't want to have to spend $80 on another pair when I already have a pair.

Speaking of running.  I started.  Well, more like running and walking. But... I'm running more, longer, than I ever have before. Ever. Ever.  Ever!!  It feels good. I can't wait to do it again tomorrow.

So... yeah.  One day at a time.  Motivation, self assurance, and know that I CAN DO THIS!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Last year on my birthday I weighed 325lbs.  This year on my birthday I weighed 202lbs.

123lb difference!!

I spent the day with my BFF Jen at the Hard Rock Cafe, the same place we went last year! So, of course, I had her take some pictures so I could do a side-by-side comparison of the difference a year can make!

Click on the picture to make it bigger!

We tried going up on the roof so I could get the same picture as last year, but it was closed.  So we went out on the street and got this shot for the comparison!

Click on the picture to make it bigger!

I'm really looking forward to seeing what the next year brings me!!! Just about 26 days or so until I start my journey with my family to Germany!

Bras and Boobs

Ok men... you might want to stop reading, cause this one is more of a post the ladies can relate with!! haha

Bras and Boobs!

So, back when I was fat (ha! I love saying that!) and weighed 325lbs... I was a 44C... probably even a 46, but I wouldn't let myself buy that big of a bra. I had a really hard time finding bras that weren't expensive, that were cute and that fit.  I really only had one choice of where to get bras.... Lane Bryant.  Torrid had some, but they always ran a little too small for me.  Lane Bryant bras ran about $35-50 each and sometimes had sales... so I'd get two during their buy one get one half off.

Back in September... I decided it was time to buy new bras.  So, I went to the only place I knew... Lane Bryant... and got sized.  40D.  Huh?  D?  Seriously? I just lost 80lbs... how did my boobs get bigger?  I had the lady measure again and yup... my boobs were BIGGER!!  When I stopped to think about it... it kinda made sense, right?  My body got smaller around, making my cup size bigger?? Or maybe more of what it truly was?? Ugh.   I don't know. So, I bought two new bras for A LOT of money in size 40D.  Fine.  I have bigger boobs.  Whatever.

Yesterday,  my friend Desi took me to Ross to shop for bras.  Ross, I thought, really? They don't have anything that will fit me?  Oh... I was wrong.  They had bras.  TONS of them.  And... get this... for only $5.99!!!  What? GET OUT OF TOWN!!!! Hells yes!!!

Ok, so I'm in the fitting room and I get to tryin' on some of these super cute bras.  38D.  Yup.... got even smaller.  I'm in the land of the 30's now! YEEEAHHHOOOOOO!!!  I even tried on some 38C's but really my boobs just don't fit into them.   So.... D cup I am!  And a 38 at that!  Hecks yeah!!

I don't know if I've ever been a 38 as an adult.  Maybe back in high school... I don't really remember what size I wore back then.  But even then, I was a size 18/20 and now I'm a 14... so I couldn't have been a 38.

So, here they are... my new $5.99 bras.  Great price... even better size.

PS.  Tomorrow is my birthday and I'm going back to the same restaurant that I went to last year and that all my "before" pictures are from.  Yeah, that's me at my highest weight up there in the black and white dress... 325lbs.  I bought a new dress and plan to take some new pictures for a big "One Year Later" blog post!!! Can't wait!!!

Inches!

I have begun to slow down in my weight loss... which is completly normal and typical.  I'm just over six month in and have lost the bulk of my weight.  Now... the long hard road to lose the last of my weight begins.  Exercise, eating right and really focusing is what I'll need to get to my goal!

With that said... since the pounds aren't shedding off as much... I thought I'd measure myself to see if the inches were still coming off.  And I'm happy to report that they are!!

I'm at a total of 59.75 inches lost!  Here's my inches chart so we can take a look back at my progression.  Click on it to make it big enough to read.

You can see that I've continued to lose those inches!!!  Most drastically in my midsection... thank goodness!  Cause that's where most of my weight still is.

I've got a few more pounds until I hit my next goal of 199lbs... so until then, I won't be posting any before & after pictures.  I want that big milestone to be a big surprise!

An update of photos...

Well, I don't have much new to say... other than HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILY!  11 years ago she was born and I'm happy to report I weigh less than I did even before I got pregnant with her!! Yay!

Anyhoo... I do however have some recent photos to share!  As of this morning I'm down 109lbs and am feeling fabulous!  Another 17lbs until I reach my main goal of being under 200lbs! I wonder if I can do that before we move... I think that'd be awesome.  I should probably stop sneaking Christmas cookies though for that to happen.  haha

Oh... tomorrow, I go in for my 6 month check-up with my surgeon.  I get to find out how my vitamin levels are doing, protein levels, etc are.  Also, I'm going to ask him for a referral to a surgeon in Germany AND when I can start thinking about the full body lift to get rid of all this extra skin!! :) Yay!!

On to the pictures!

I'm all dressed up in my new outfit (yes, that's a waist I have!! hehe), make up done at Sephora, hair all cute.... looking fantabulous!! And really... .feeling even better!

This is me and my best friend Desi of almost 20 years! We met the summer before high school started and now she lives just a few minutes away from me!  This picture was taken last night before we left for a party! Aren't we sexy?

My handsome husband :)  We look so cute together!

This is me and Jen on my birthday in Feb. 2010.

This is me and Jen last night.  WOW! Big difference!

And cause it's her birthday... an extra picture of me and my babygirl Emme  from last night!

100 POUNDS!!!!

I finally made it to 100lbs lost!  Actually, when I stepped on the scale this morning, it was 101lbs!  Even better! :) These last 4 lbs have come off so slow.  I'd been hovering around 97-99lbs lost for about 2 1/2 weeks and then BAM I'm at 101.  Thank goodness!! Finally across that 100lbs mark!

I made two before & after pictures for this big milestone.  The first with the "before" pic I've used for all the others and then another pic I found from the summer of 2008.

I was looking in the mirror tonight and my husband comes in.  I was standing up straight and noticing how flat my tummy was getting and how much thinner my midsection is.  He said, "GOD DAMN!" in that loud, surprised, I wanna do my wife right now kinda voice!! hehe It was the best compliment ever!

Still figuring out how to get in enough calories, enough protein and keep the sugar and fat intake to a minimum. It's SO HARD to do!  But, I'm only 4 1/2 months out and I'm still learning how to do this!

Another 25 lbs and I'll be under 200lbs!  I can't wait for that milestone!  It's my next goal!  And then.... after that, who knows!! I'll cross that bridge when I get to it!

Oh ps... I can't wait until I get to a weight where I can have plastic surgery to get rid of all the extra skin.  I have this massive spare tire around my middle that's comprised of extra skin!  ACK!  I need to get rid of it ASAP!  I hate it!!

Went shopping this week too.  Into a size 16/18 jean.  Seriously.  I haven't been that size since 10th grade.  I went to Target and could actually shop in the normal size section!  AWESOME feeling!!! I love shopping!!

Yay for Weight Loss Surgery!!!

Overweight Actors on TV

Lindsey and I took several classes together at BCC where we discussed diversity... she sent me this link to an article in Marie Clarie that has me all riled up now.

Go read it HERE, then come back and read my reaction.

Like racism.... this is fatism. I hate it. Every word of her article made me cringe. And honestly, I stopped reading 1/2 way thru it because it pissed me off so much.

She said anorexia was okay because some people are naturally thin... but seriously, some people are naturally bigger too.

And... I think that EVERYONE, regardless of size, color, ethnicity... deserve starring roles in TV. We need more diversity in the media to show the beautiful differences that make up human kind.

Would you be disgusted with two larger people making out in front of you? Maybe if they had their rolls hanging out or were dirty or were doing something disgusting. But Mike & Molly are well dressed, groomed and I'm sure smell fantastic. Screw Marie Claire and their writers.

I won't ever be reading their magazine again if that's their view on people who aren't what society deems as acceptable or beautiful.

Ok... So, deep breath Betsy.  Breathe in slowly and read the rest of the article... it could get better, right?

WRONG.

In the article the writer says, "I think obesity is something that most people have a ton of control over. It's something they can change, if only they put their minds to it."

Yes, because for my entire life, I never dieted, exercised or tired a million different ways to lose weight.  I guess my mind was never really set enough on losing the weight.  I guess I just didn't try hard enough. *eye rolling* I think that for some people who don't struggle with weight, they don't understand how hard it really is being fat.  It's a struggle every day.  And it's not a matter of "putting my mind to it" that will allow me to lose weight.  For me, it took a surgery to physically force my body to lose weight.  Diet and exercise were no longer a viable option for me.  I tried and there were too many other physical ailments in my way.  I think that if the author were to live in my life for a week when I was 100lbs heavier, she might change her mind about it being such an easily controllable issue.

And then she goes on to give some advice on how to lose weight and exercise.  One of my doctors tried to give me that speech once before I had my surgery.  I laughed at him and said, "Do you not think I haven't already tried that?  Been down that road before, several times? Do you really think I'd be asking you to cut me open and rearrange my insides if diet and exercise worked for me?"  SERIOUSLY.  Get a CLUE.  Diet and exercise don't vigorously work for severely overweight people.

Now, I know you might say well it worked for the people on "The Biggest Loser".  You're right.  It did work.  But they lived at the fat camp for several weeks, had trainers and devoted all their time to weight loss.  What average person has that time?  I know I don't.

The author of this article is a big bully.  Who, I'm sure has self esteem and body image issues of her own.  I feel sorry for her really.  She is the one who is probably hurting inside more than any fat person on TV or that I know.

She apologizes at the end in an update for hurting peoples feelings.  But, as my friend Lindsay said, "too little, too late."

I think that shows like "Mike and Molly," "Huge," and "Drop Dead Diva" are important parts of our culture and they show diversity in size.  These shows show that people who are overweight lead lives that are just as normal as everyone else.  They don't say that being overweight is good, healthy or what everyone should strive for... they show us that diversity can be beautiful.

I think back to my Body Image & Art class I took at UWT where I was introduced to a book called, "Fat? So?" (they've got a website too!) where I was able to learn about accepting myself and my body at any size.  The tag line is "For fat people who don't apologize for their size".  It's definitely a book worth looking at, for people big and small.

*BIG SIGH*  Ok... I think I've gotten it all out of my system now.  I'm almost 100lbs lighter, but still... I will always feel like a "fat girl".  I will always be sensitive to issues like these... and I hope that maybe, I can help people see that being overweight isn't a choice.  No one wants to be fat.  But sometimes... it's just the hand we were dealt in life.

It gets better.

If you feel like it... leave me a comment and let me know what you thought of the article, my reaction, or what you think about overweight actors on TV.

Boobs

Yes, you read that right.  Boobs.  I've always had big boobs, but they've never been one of those things that really stood out on my body.  Mainly because there was so much of everything else, they were hidden.

Lately, I've been wearing tighter fitting shirts.  Ones that well, show off my boobs.  And seriously, I think they are looking damn good!!  Yay for boobs!

Just to add a comparison, my friend Erica found this old pic of me from last summer.  4th of July I think.  Gross, huh? lol  My boobs look SO MUCH BETTER now!!

Take Me Out to the Ballgame! Part 2

Saturday night was my first Mariners game since my surgery.  It was also my last Mariners game before we move to Germany.  It was a night full of mixed emotions... excited, happy, sad, proud, accomplished.

See, I've been going to Mariners games my entire life.  My love for baseball all started when I was little and my big brother, Robert, would take me into the street in front of our house and play catch with me.  He'd quiz me on the Mariners line ups and he'd teach me everything he knew about baseball.  Baseball was the one thing that brought me and Robert together.  Still today, it's the one thing we always have in common.

The last time I was at Safeco Field for a game, I couldn't fit comfortably in the seats.  I was cramped, the people next to me were cramped.  I sweat.  And I was just uncomfortable.  I had gone into the M's Team Shop looking for a new hoodie, but left empty handed when nothing fit me.  I was just too big for any of the cute stuff.

Dave and I arrive at The Safe and we go straight to the Team Shop.  I was down 80+ pounds and I wanted a new hoodie to commemorate my final game and my weight loss.  Walking into that store, knowing I didn't have to buy the biggest size they had, knowing I could try on anything I wanted and it would fit... well, I've never experienced a feeling quite like that before at Safeco.

I picked out this, and it's only an XL.  Not an XXL or XXXL like I used to wear.  Regular ole XL!!

We get to our seats and to my surprise, when I sat down, there was room on either side of me!  I fit!! And what was even more amazing, I could cross my legs!  What? YES!! Cross my legs!!

(On a side note:  Crossing my legs is my new favorite thing.  When I was fatter, there was no way my big ole legs could be crossed.  So now that I can do, I do it all the time!!  There is just something about crossing my legs that makes me feel more like a woman, more feminine.)

So, I got a new jacket and I fit in the seats.  A M A Z I N G feelings both of those things were.

The night ended with me in tears.  Safeco, the Kingdome and the Seattle Mariners have been a  part of my summer my whole life.  As I stood at the top of the stairs, looking down onto the glory that is the Mariners... I cried.  All the memories, joy, laughter that was had in this amazing place will be cherished in my heart forever.   I even got engaged there (on the center field scoreboard!!!).  I'm getting choked up now just thinking about how much I'm going to miss Seattle baseball.

Good news though... I'm still losing weight and victories like these are being had all the time!  Weight loss is amazing and I'm so happy with my progress!

75 POUNDS!

So, it's been a minute since I've written on Skinny Betsy... but, I've been a little preoccupied!  Now that things have settled down a bit,  I have more time to get back to writing.

First things first... I hit 75 POUNDS lost today!!  I stepped on the scale this morning and I was like WOO HOOOOO I can't believe it! I kept saying outloud to myself and my husband, "I lost 75lbs! I lost 75lbs! I lost 75lbs!"  It's like I had to say it to myself over and over before I really believed it.  I am becoming a different person, inside and out and sometimes... it's just hard to believe!

Here's a pic from last week... not quite 75lbs yet, but close!

Dave and I are going to start walking together... which I'm really looking forward to! And... we're getting a stationary bike from a family friend.  So I'm really looking forward to riding that too!  I have a goal of taking the hike down to the bottom of Snoqualmie Falls before we move to Germany.  I'm hoping to do it soon!!

Protein French Vanilla Creamer

Last Christmas my husband bought me a Keurig 1-cup Coffee Maker.  Since the surgery, I've been reluctant to start using it again because 1) I'm not supposed to have a lot of caffeine and 2) creamers typically have no protein in them.... so coffee really doesn't add any nutritional value to my diet.  It's already hard enough as it is to get in enough food and protein during the day, that I had to find a way to make a creamer that had some nutritional value to it!!! So, this is what I've come up with!  I like A LOT of creamer in my coffee... so depending on how much you use... this could be adjusted!

Protein French Vanilla Creamer
1/4 cup Non-Fat French Vanilla Creamer
1/4 cup Non-Fat Milk
1 tablespoon Vanilla Protein Powder
1 large cup of coffee with ROOM

In a measuring cup that pours, combine the creamer, milk and powder.  With a fork, stir until all the protein powder has been broken up and dissolved.

Add creamer mixture to cup of coffee.  With the fork, stir again.  A few clumps of protein powder may still be visible, but those will dissolve in the hot coffee if you keep stirring!

Enjoy!

Small Victory!

I went shopping today for a cute summer shirt that actually fit me to wear to a bbq this afternoon.  I hopped over to Fashion Bug, a store where I used to wear 3x and at my highest 4x shirts.  Well today... I tried on some cute 2x shirts thinking they'd fit.  Boy was I WRONG! They were TOO BIG!  I had to goto the smallest size they had in the store... a 1x!  I almost had a moment in the dressing room when I tried it on... HOLY COW!  I went from a 4x to a 1x in 7 weeks!  I couldn't believe my eyes! I turned to the side to look at myself in the mirror and WOAH, my boobs stick out further than my stomach does.  WHAT??!?! HOLY COW!!! I'm actually seeing a dramatic change in my body and it's AWESOME!!!!!!!!

PS... I had another moment in the car after I left the store.  I really wanted to call my Mom and tell her all about it, giggle, laugh, cry and be happy together.  I miss her the most in times like these... when all I want to do is call her.

Keepin' up... focus... staying on track

I've only lost 1lb since Friday.... 6 days and 1 lb.  I know I shouldn't be obsessed with the scale, but I really am disappointed in just 1lb.  And then, I feel guilty about all the things I should be doing that I haven't been.  I've fallen off the wagon, so to speak.

I was doing so good for about 3 weeks.... exercising all the time, eating right... and then, I don't know what happened, but it all just stopped.  I haven't been on a walk in 2 weeks, I haven't been eating the "best" things and now... the scale is showing me what happens when I don't stay on track.

Sometimes I feel so much pressure to succeed at this.  Pressure I put on myself, pressure from my Mom in Heaven, from my doctor, my family.  I feel like if I let my family, friends down... that yet again, I'll be a failure at something.  And sometimes, that's so overwhelming that I just stop doing everything.

I need to keep up the good work.  But really, how do I do that?  Will it take another 50lbs before I feel motivated all the time?  Will it take my husband coming home?  I don't know.  It's just so frustrating.  I wish it was easier.

I'm not looking for everyone to answer these questions for me.... I guess I just needed to say it out loud so that maybe I'll hold myself accountable and get my butt in gear.
